The 3%: Militias and the Poison of Bureaucracy

They say that bureaucracy breeds incompetence.  That statement could not be more true than within the ranks of our military and law enforcement.  Unfortunately, the same has happened to our militias.  Organizations that are meant to be decentralized in order to be effective has been drowned in excessive structure and organization to the point that they are no different from the actual military.  Then again, seeing how they seem more interested in playing army most of the time than being in actual militia it really isn't all that surprising.  Yes, I know a militia is meant to be well trained and organized, but they're also meant to be small.  These organizations nowadays are massive, organized at the state and even national levels.  With so much self ingrained bureaucracy that there is no way these militias could be effective if they were ever needed.

Often these groups structure themselves as if they are actual military units.  They'll have ranks with full blown promotion ceremonies.  Even reading a promotion warrant that has been modified to reflect the militia and not the military.  Instead of traditional units, most groups are broken up within their respective states by region or "zones" and have an appointed leader for their zone.  Matt Freeman stated in a recent episode of his podcast The Statist Quo (if you don't listen to him then fuck you) that militias back in the good ole days would elect their leaders.  After spending 5 years in the modern militia movement, I know that shit would never happen.  Most people are just appointed due to either minimal activity in their area or they happen to be friendly with someone in a higher echelon of command.  An organization that I associate myself with from time to time because I'm a glutton for punishment, decided to go with a sort of board of directors.  Whether it is training, communications or equipment there is a director for everything.  With that said, nothing happens within the organization without approval from directors.  Even basic conversation about someone looking for a piece of kit ends up getting back to the director of procurement whom I assume is just some random asshole with a Condor dealer account (speaking of which stay away from the company, everything they make is shit).  So obviously with such structure, it makes it almost impossible to get the most basic of shit done.

In terms of actual leadership, most of the militias that are around today were founded withing the last 10 to 15 years and their founders are still around and in most cases have a death grip on control of their organizations.  Regardless of how incompetent they are, many refuses to relinquish control.  Probably because many of them see themselves as the modern George Washington or some shit.

As incompetence is a natural occurrence within militias, it goes without saying that fucking morons find themselves in positions of power.  Firearm instructors who don't know shit about weapons safety.  Gear experts who just happen to be salesmen for Condor (for real stay the fuck away from that company).  Worst of all, combat instructors who either never seen combat or never had any formal training.  Not saying that either of those are a requirement but I've seen guys conduct training with their only qualification being watching a Magpul DVD or reading a book by a contractor and know I'm not fucking joking about that.  Some have even had less than that.  Even if some of these guys are military vets, most got out at least 5 years before the War on Terror and have little to know experience in regards to modern tactics or techniques.  However, people like this still find ways to get put in charge of shit and the bureaucracy keeps them there.

This is something I haven't done yet but now seems perfect.  This man is George Curbelo.  He is the leader of the New York Light Foot Militia, which started as the New York Militia, which was a merging of 2 other groups (including mine) with his own New York Revolution, which might have been called Regulators at some point.  Or some shit it gets confusing.  It was his militia that decided to go down to Charlottesville to "keep the peace"  but we all know how that worked out.  Now they're getting sued and he's trying to martyr himself and his people.  I met this guy relatively early in my time with the movement, he seemed okay and idealistic (constantly quoting John Adams which is actually not the best choice if you love liberty) at first but I could never have a real conversation with him because he was too busy play politician and getting his time in the spotlight.  Now let's get back to that one group NY Militia.  Here's something for the unaware, organized militias are illegal in NY.  We also have an assault weapons ban (which barely anyone adheres to including the State Police but the SAFE Act ain't the point at the moment).  So not only was he trying to organize the 3% groups in the state, he also tried to organized them under a single banner.  As soon as he announced this, the first thing I thought was the RICO Act.  While intended to battle organized crime, the act also covers conspiracies.  In that case, the summbitch put every 3% group in the state in a position where if 1 dumbass in 1 group could fuck up and potentially put the entire 3% movement in the state at risk.  Yes, General Washington here took bureaucracy to the extreme by merging all these groups together into a single entity.

Bureaucracy and incompetence seem to go hand in hand when it comes to militias and the 3% movement.  These "patriots" have no clue how to operate like a militia.  All they know is bureaucracy so it's likely to just be a natural occurrence.  It's just a matter of whether it's the bureaucracy is creating the incompetence or the wannabe George Washington's who are already incompetent to begin with.
